Transferred by translation – discussion on soon-to-published English translation of Cankar’s Images from Dreams
PRE-PREMIERE OF THE SLOVENIAN DAYS BOOK FESTIVAL: TRANSFERRED BY TRANSLATION, MONDAY, April 16, at 7:00 pm: Images from Dreams at Slovenska Kinoteka. Projection of Vojko Duletič’s short film Podobe iz sanj (Images from Dreams) and of the documentary Cankar na Rožniku. Post-film discussion: Cankar in a foreign language and in the language of images. Guests: Jasmin B. Frelih, Nikolai Jeffs and Barbara Zemljič. Host: Tanja Petrič.
This discussion on Litteræ Slovenicæ’s soon-to-published English translation of Cankar’s Images from Dreams will revolve around the adaptation of and the foreign-language reception of Cankar’s final book – a book that bears the stamp of personal distress and the traumatic experience of the First World War. If Cankar’s works been translated at the time they were published, would they have had an impact on the literary trends of the first decades of the 20th century? What is the significance of translating and projecting Cankar today? How can Cankar’s language be imported in the Anglo-American space or poured into an image? The event is co-organized by Litteræ Slovenicæ.
